To have a more beneficial fasting experience, you may want to drink green tea.  “Green tea contains anti-oxidants and theanine.  These speed-up your rate of metabolism and protect the tissues from toxic material.”  Furthermore, black, oolong, white, as well as several other teas, all come from leaves of a similar or exact tea plant as the one that green tea is derived from.  All of these teas have zero calories and inhabit lots of antioxidants as well, thus becoming very beneficial for one’s fast.  However, “if you do find that you just can’t stand to have tea without milk just limit your milk intake to 100 kJ or 20 Cals per fast and you should still have the same results from your fast.”  It is still recommended that the consumption of tea is completed without any additives though.

In addition to tea, coffee is acceptable, but it must be black.  Otherwise, your fast could be cut short.  This would be a result of to much sugar or cream, which could result in a spike in insulin, thus disrupting your fast.  The question of whether or not one should consume black coffee during fasting really depends on the reasoning behind the fast.  If weight loss is the desired goal then coffee is fine.  In fact, coffee contains “appetite supressing effects” that can help you complete or even prolong your fast.  However, if one’s goal is to experience anti-aging benefits through autophagy then black coffee should not be consumed.  “The reason is that even black coffee disrupts the process of autophagy which is the main way that intermittent fasting promotes longevity.”  Sparkling water has been used as a way to suppress appetite, as well.
